What you need is a ‘wasta’. You are not getting anywhere without one. No, not pasta, it’s called wasta sans the sauce. Nepotism is everywhere. Want to get a job in a government office? Can’t wait 6 months for your passport? Need a promotion? Failed driving test but badly need a license? There is always an influential person somewhere. A few phone calls or a recommendation can make your life wonderful. Such is the power of a wasta!
It’s always good to have connections in high places. All of us at one point of time in our life have had the privilege to bend rules and get the job done easily rather than going through the painstaking effort that is usually required. Here in the Middle East, a wasta or the connection plays a crucial role. It is an Arabic word that translates to something in the line of ‘influential person’. Say you need a job in a good company. Just because you know someone, you get it. So what happens to the candidate who actually deserved job? He or she finds another job or ends up becoming a depressed maniac.
A lot of people venture to the Gulf seeking jobs. I was once unemployed and sent millions (exaggeration) of mails to several companies. Never got a reply nor did I get the job I wanted. All I needed was a wasta, but I knew none. Sucks! When I check the inbox at office, the amount of CVs pouring in seeking employment is overwhelming. An average of 10 emails a day ranging from drivers to engineers send emails. This makes me really really sad. Flashback one year and I was one among them sending mails desperately looking for a job.
Not everyone is fortunate enough to find a wasta. I always wonder how did someone get to a point where they became so influential? Anyone who says ‘hard work’ is going to get a red swollen cheek. Money speaks. Oil money makes you rich. But yeah! There’s perspective too. And if you are born to a Sheik, even better! This brings us to the famous question. Can money buy you happiness?
