I was googling for motivational posters and had to facepalm when I came across the one that said, “BELIEVE IN YOURSELF! DON’T EVER LET SOMEONE TELL YOU THAT YOU ARE NOT GOOD ENOUGH. NEVER FORGET THAT YOU WERE THE FASTEST SPERM.”
Now we go back to a little bit of Biology. Get over it, you were not the fastest sperm. Infact you were the lazy sperm who just got lucky. You were not fast enough to reach the egg. And if you were the first one, you would have died. Here, let me explain.
The male semen has around hundred million sperms. These sperms come in a rush and are on a quest to find the egg. It is unfortunate that many don’t make it through the journey. Some die of exhaustion. Actually on an average of around 100 sperms make it to the site of fertilization. We can say that we were among the few who made it through the journey.
Now the job is to penetrate the ovum. Well, it’s not that easy. There are two barriers, the CORONA RADIATA and ZONA PELLUCIDA. Imagine, the ovum is the castle. You need to get in. But you have to get past the soldiers known as Corona Radiata. The first batch of sperms that came fastest clash with the soldiers and die trying to break in. The remaining clash with the huge wall called Zona Pellucida and yes there are casualties. After the damage is done, the third wave of sperms manage to break into the castle. Yes I admit, you were the first one to enter. But bear in mind several sperms made a sacrifice for you so that you could be the ‘one’. That’s how you conquered the castle. By conquering I mean fertilize.
So were we lazy here? Or were we smart? I think we were manipulative enough to know that slow and steady wins the race. So long spermies. We have a new battle called ‘LIFE’ now. Keeps punching you in the face now and then. Let’s all roar now. “THIS IS SPARTAAAAAA!”
