The title sounds like a B-Grade horror movie, but in reality I am here to talk about the pain my bed has caused. When you have a mattress that’s like a soft plushy cushion, it’s time to get rid of it and buy a new one. I’ve had enough of waking up with a bad back pain and a stiff neck. It went from bad to worse. Right now I can’t afford a new one, so now I sleep on a mat on the floor. Edmond Dantes in The Count of Monte Cristo sleeps on the floor instead of a bed after being imprisoned for too long. I too, have resorted to the hard floor and find it much more comfortable. Sleeping on the floor does improve blood circulation, corrects your posture and prevents back pain. Unfortunately, It’s winter and it feels like I’m lying on a freezer.
If there’s one thing I’m an expert at, it’s at the art of sleeping. Sleeping comfortably can change your life. Waking up fresh and relaxed will help you get through the day. If you wake up everyday with tiredness and a horrible body pain, it’s time for a new mattress. So how to sleep well?
There are many factors that help us achieve good sleep. The perfect room temperature, the clothes you choose to wear to bed (birthday suit works for some), moderate silence, stress levels in the body and most importantly your mattress. You need to feel as if you are floating in air for a relaxed slumber.
Spring Mattress: This is the most common kind known as innerspring mattress. It has been around for decades and is found in most houses. These couple friendly mattress and readily available in your nearest furniture store. It uses steel coil support system. The spring shape and number of gauges may vary according to the manufacturer. Costlier the mattress, better it is. You might need to flip your mattress every month to retain that firmness.
Memory Foam: Basically it is made of different densities of foam that reciprocates to temperature and weight. They remember the shape and contour of your body thereby reducing the pressure points when you shift and reduces body pain. If you have a partner in bed, the tossing and turning will not affect you. The downside is that it may make you feel hot and there is a strange chemical smell that may be unpleasant to some.
Latex Mattress: These have an above average customer satisfaction. Let’s just say they have the advantages of memory foam, such as relieving pain and latex mattresses might be the right solution for your body pain. They are made from natural or synthetic rubber and give uniform support to your body. These are indeed comfortable mattresses and are not readily available in stores. If you are very health conscious, then I suggest you choose a nice latex mattress. You might need to research a little more on choosing the right latex mattress.
Air Mattress: Yes, you do have makeshift mattresses where you inflate it with the help of an electric pump and voila it’s sleepy time. But there’s more! There are higher end airbeds. Similar to an innerspring mattress, but instead of the coils, it has air chambers and a foam layer on the top. The firmness can be adjusted here. If you and your partner have different needs, then you can adjust the firmness accordingly. You might need to exercise caution if you have back pain.
There are other types of bed, which basically use the same principles. Adjustable beds are the ones you find in hospitals, orthopedic beds that are designed for people with spinal disc problems. Sofa beds are a great help when you don’t want your guest to sleep on the couch but then you convert it into a comfy bed. You also have water beds for fun and normal foam beds which is again a very common piece of furniture. So yeah, you have to choose what you need. You deserve to sleep comfortably.
My idea of a perfect bed would be a king size just for myself with extra pillows of course. I have always wanted to own a king size bed because I contribute a lot of time to sleep and while I’m at it, might as well enjoy my sleep in the most luxurious way ever. I always hug a pillow to bed, keep one for the feet which provides some warmth and a usual pillow is under my head. Speaking of warmth, there’s nothing like hugging a human being while you sleep. Body warmth is the best warmth ever. If you have a partner in bed then that’s good for you. For single people like me, there’s always a one-night stand.
Mattresses are made to last a lifetime. But considering the fact that our body changes over time, you might need to think of buying a new one. If your mattress is 10 to 15 years old, chances are that it would have collected infinite number of germs, allergens, dust mites and even fungus. If you can’t find the joy of sleeping on your existing one like you used to, time to chuck it out and invest in a good mattress. Thank me later for the advice!
