Click-bait title. Got you! Every teen boy has experimented with a shaving blade by simply sliding it down his smooth beardless skin pretending to be a man. All fun and games until you cut yourself by mistake and your mom freaks out. Ah, nostalgia! Those gillette commercials are to be blamed. God has gifted me with abundance hair everywhere except where I need it the most. Currently I am at stage 4 of male baldness pattern, but who gives a damn. Jason Statham is my role model. Soon it will be Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson ‘The Rock’.
I always wanted to grow a beard like Albus Dumbledore. If there was a best beard competition in the fantasy world, I guess there would be a tie between Gandalf and Dumbledore. Hagrid would come a close second and Ghimli third maybe. Khal Drogo would win the well groomed beard nomination and guess who would be awarded the worst beard ever? Captain Davy Jones.
So what is No-Shave November? It’s a web based non-profit organisation that encourages you to grow facial hair by sporting a beard or moustache and donate the money saved from shaving or grooming to cancer awareness and those battling cancer.
‘Movember’ is another charity foundation that asks men to grow a moustache in the month of November. It is actually a campaign to raise awareness on testicular cancer and prostate cancer, the two most common kind of cancer in men.
Learn how to do a Testicular Self Exam here. It is important to visit your doctor, have regular check ups and get blood tests done at-least once in six months and make sure you are disease free. The current lifestyle that includes unhealthy food habits like junk food addiction, adulterated edibles, pesticide sprayed vegetables are causes of sicknesses.
So this November, grow that beard and moustache and let it flow freely. Your face carpet is a symbol of manliness! Let us see what are some advantages and disadvantages of growing a beard.
Absolute Health Benefit! Beards will protect you from harmful UV rays. Also your beard and your moustache acts as a natural filter to keep away allergens from entering your mouth and nose thus reducing chances of throat pain, cold etc. But make sure you keep your beard clean. Your beard is also a neck warmer and in case of sudden cold climate, it keeps you warm.
Getting ready on time. Just imagine the time you save everyday by not shaving. Hell, you’re even contributing to saving water by closing that running tap. Dr. Herbert Mescon in 1972, professor of the Department of Dermatology at Boston University School of Medicine, told The Spartanburg Herald that the average man will spend an estimated 3,350 hours of his life shaving. That is 139 days. And all that money you spend on razor blades and shaving cream. You think it’s a miniscule amount? Try counting from age 16 to age 60 perhaps.
Feel more confident with a beard. Not only is it a fashion statement to grow a beard or a moustache, a beard actually draws attention. Especially if it is well groomed. A kick ass beard will make you look more serious and people will not take you lightly. Walk straight and chin always up, you’re just going to look more charismatic and reliable. Command that respect, provided your beard is not unkempt. Otherwise you’ll look like a homeless person.
Look more attractive with a beard. Some women dig men with beards. Some hate it. A study carried out by psychologists at Northumbria University in 2008 stated that most women in an experiment rated men with a stubble as aggressive, tough, mature, masculine and dominant. Having a beard is a sociosexual sign and a biological marker of sexual maturity (as per The Telegraph).
You have to be careful while eating. You don’t want food particles stuck on your beard or water soaked up which drips down like a leaky faucet. Always keep a hanky handy!
Mistaken identity is a huge problem. In some parts of the world, you will be judged for sporting a huge beard. Like how the Sikhs were mistaken for terrorists after the 9/11 attacks, thanks to Bin Laden. Also if you have a long beard, good luck dealing with airport security check.
Trying to charm ladies by growing a beard? Be careful because it may backfire. Some women can’t stand a hairy man. The rug on your face can be a repellant for females and also comes in the way of a kiss.
You will face unnecessary questions from family, friends and relatives. “Love failure? Did you have a bad break up?”, “Are you broke? hall I buy a new shaving set for you?” You will have to roll your eyes. Some kids are scared of bearded men (Not Santa Claus though).
Your beard will be the biggest complication if you don’t maintain it well. You can have ‘beardruff’ and that is a huge put off for people around you. You need to keep your beard aligned and well shaped. Wash it regularly and shampoo well. Use a beard oil for enrichment.
So what do you think? You still want to grow a beard or rush to the nearest store to buy a shaving kit? The decision is completely up to you. But make sure at least for the month of November you donate something to cancer awareness or help someone out who needs financial aid for treatment.
